The year is 2217, the United Citizens Federation is the standing government and has been since the end of the 20th century with humanity united under them. The Federal Council which is headed up by the Sky Marshal, the UCF is a very militaristic however, despite this the standard of living planetwide is high. The UCF breaks up the population into two categories; The civilians and the citizens. Everyone is a civilian under law unless they decide to take up a term of Federal Service. Civillians have few rights, although they are catered for by the goverment they are not given as many priviledges as Citizens. Citizens are individuals who have decided to enrol in the Federal Service, Federal Service is optional and one is able to live out their days as a civilian. The MI prides itself on it's strong code of conduct and strict discipline. Reward through hardwork is the way the MI operates, an MI recruit is expected to be strong in character and ready to face the challenge. The Infantry and the fleet however do not get on well, there is a bitter rivalry between the two. The common phrase is "MI does the dying, fleet just does the flying".
The ruling is that an individual must complete a two year term of service in the service. Once they have completed this service they can then leave, they have achieved their citizenship and have all the privileges the Federation can offer. However they may choose not to leave and go "Career" by doing so they continue and make a career out of their job. They will have their citizenship but they will be working within the Federal Service. Should an individual decide during the training phase that they can't take it they can sign a 1240A form and quit. By doing so though they revoke all their chances of becoming a citizen.
The Arachnids, are a race of giant insectoid aliens. Commonly known as Archie's or bugs, by the Federal forces they are a blight on humanity. While at first considered to be mindless swarms of brain dead insects, it has come to light that they are in fact a highly intelligent race. Federal Scientists cannot say what exactly created them, but it is apparent that they originate from the planet Klendathu. Since initial contact with them, much information has come to light, moreso as war as declared against them. The Arachnids organise themselves into vast colonies, as similar to that of an Ant or Wasp colony. Their communication and government was a mystery for quite sometime. However after the declaration of war and the disasterous assault on their homeworld it was concluded that there clearly was some form of intelligence. While the subject was hotly debated, some claiming that insects with intelligence was pure nonsense, studies went on to try and find this so called government. From the research conducted by Terran scientists, there has a simple breakdown of Arachnid society put down. The Worker, Soldier and Command Castes. The most commonly encountered Caste is clearly the Soldier Caste, as these bugs will often patrol the surface. The Worker cast will remain within the udnerground colony digging tunnels and maintaining it. Up until this system was created, the Command Caste was simply believed a myth. However the MI discovered and captured, what has come to be known as a Brain Bug. It is believed that these bugs govern colonies and communicate via psychic waves to the other Arachnids in the swarm. There is however still question as to how the entire race is unified, particularly in this time of war. .
.The Federation has already began drawing up plans to reclaim lost planets, planets which still house human survivors and are overrun by bug swarms. It will not be long before the Federation decides to stop defending and start attacking.
